On October
2nd. 2009 Rio de Janeiro was selected as the first South American host for the 2016 Olympic Games. Will Rio also get
the 2014 FIFA World Cup? If they pull this off, Rio will be the focus of the sporting world for many years to come. I’m
sure that most people know roughly where Rio de Janeiro is situated; but soon there will be no doubt as to its position in
the World. Here you will find a satellite view of the city.

They are overlooked by the statue of O Cristo Redentor (Christ the redeemer). This 38m (120') tall statue is on
top of Corcovado Mountain. It took nine years to build from concrete and soapstone; and was dedicated in 1931. In 2007 it
was named as one of the new seven wonders of the world. The image of Christ the Redeemer is courtesy of The C.I.A. https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/
Rio is known the World over for its four day carnival festival which usually takes place in February with approximately
500,000 foreign visitors needing flights and accomodation for this event alone.
Formula 1 racing is another major attraction of Brazil
with many of the great drivers coming from here. After a delayed qualifying session because of heavy rain Rubens Barrichello
has qualified in pole position, much to the delight of his home crowd. His first pole position for 5 years, with his team
mate (Jenson Button) and closest rival for the world championship in 14th. position. The Brazillian crowd going wild
chanting "Rubino, Rubino" Can Rubens do it tomorow? I hope so. He deserves it. Well, Rubens did'nt make
number 1 after a puncture in the last phase of the race dropped him down to 8th. place. Mark webber was the winner, Robert
Kubica 2nd., and Lewis Hamilton 3rd. With Jenson Button finishing in fifth place making him the new world champion. http://www.formula1.com/races/in_detail/brazil_822/circuit_diagram.html
Brazil has a lot to offer the World; and the World will see what it has to offer.
